In 2006, three of Philadelphia’s up and coming musicians with an extreme passion for Greek music created Seizmos Greek Music and Entertainment. Their main goal is to break the mold of Greek music and expand its horizons to new levels of enjoyment and excitement. In doing so, Seizmos seeks to always keep the crowds intrigued and moving!
Almost immediately, Seizmos took off and acquired additional musicians furthering its capabilities as Philadelphia’s premier live Greek band. Playing many of Philadelphia’s top venues, as well as events up and down the East Coast, Seizmos gained a significant following and quickly created a large demand for superior music. The band has also toured in Greece, playing along with many other top musicians.
Seizmos specializes and caters to many different types of events including: clubs and parties, festivals, dances, weddings and baptisms. A group whose only goal is to make you move, Seizmos brings the rhythms to make you shake!
The original line-up
Vocals, Guitar, Pontian Lyra
Evan is the lead vocalist and the guitarist for Seizmos. His Laiko style and passion for Greek music allows him to yield a versatile vocal range. As the guitarist, he creates a strong presence by adding unique rhythm and grooves, creating that special touch which drives fans to dance. His 15 years of experience as a guitarist includes a diverse musical background covering Flamenco, Middle Eastern, Pontian, Classical and Rock genres. He also plays the Pontian Lyra and is well known for that in the Philadelphia area.
From a young age, the only thing that Evan dreamt of was to be a musician. He began his journey in Greek music from age 7 and took off from there, with his father as a huge influence. His other influences include the greats of Greek music, paying close attention to the styles of namely Stelios Kazantzidis. He learned Pontian music from Greece’s top Pontian artists, such as Giorgos Sofianidis and Alexis Parxaridis. His experience extends to playing major events and projects in both Greece and the East Coast.
George (Ντόγγη) Carafides
There is really nothing else to be said about this self taught phenomenon. He is the epitome of how a bouzouki should be played. Ntoggy’s slick style and fast fingers entice all listeners. His style in playing all genres of Greek music allows for a very versatile sound. He thrives at playing the most exciting tsiftetelia and raises spirits with his mangiko style zeimbekiko.
George gains his influence from combining the styles of the old time bouzouki greats, creating a sound of his own. George and Evan have 10 years of experience playing live music together. George has played and toured throughout Greece and the East Coast, showing off his skills and enticing crowds all over the world.
Niko (Vomba) Paparoidamis
Originally from Harrisburg, PA, Niko joined Seizmos in the Spring of 2008. Niko is quickly becoming one of the most recognized keyboard players in the area. Niko’s style and tastes allow for a variety of sounds that works well in all types of Greek music.
Niko’s influences in music stem from years of classical training on the piano. His training gave him the discipline needed to be able to master every mode and scale possible. He has played in various ensembles and has made a name for himself among the classical community. Today, Niko has developed a reputation as one of the top Greek keyboardists in the Philadelphia area.
From Korinos, Greece, Tassos is the newest member of Seizmos. Tasso joined in January 2011. He is one of the most experienced Greek drummers in the area, and has the most dynamic sound of all. Tasso’s style and rhythm is a driving force in out music. Tasso started out as a doumbek player, playing for various bands in the area and moved on to playing the full drum set where he has mastered his craft. Now playing with Seizmos, Tasso continues to entice audiences around the area.
Tasso’s influences come from years of training and performing with various Greek musicians and bands from the area. Due to his successes in music, Tasso continues to push the limits of drumming and Greek music and is a major factor in Seizmos’ musical recipe.
